We are standing at the dawn of the greatest visual revolution in the history of art. Today, the boundary between what an artist can imagine and what the canvas—digital or physical—can hold has nearly vanished. From light installations that rewrite the laws of physics to Artificial Intelligence painting new worlds, the visual “WOW” effect is the new language of aesthetics. Are you ready to look beyond the fram?

1. The Anatomy of Visual Impact: Dopamine for the Soul

In art, the “WOW” effect is that moment of catharsis that transforms ordinary viewing into a profound experience. When we stand before a piece that shocks our senses with its scale or intricate detail, our brain releases a powerful dose of dopamine. This isn’t just admiration; it is a moment of pure presence. Today’s artists use this biological mechanism to create “emotional anchors”—images that are not just seen, but physically felt.

Author/Source: SciePro / Science Photo Library via Dreamstime

Description: A macro shot of a human eye with an integrated digital interface – a metaphor for the “new vision” of the modern art connoisseur.

2. Artificial Intelligence: When Algorithms Began to Dream

AI is not merely a tool; it is a new kind of co-creator. When algorithms “dream,” they combine centuries of art history with impossible geometry. Platforms like Midjourney and DALL-E allow the artist to materialize surreal ideas that were, until recently, prisoners of the subconscious. This is the birth of “hyper-reality”—art where colors and forms are more intense than nature itself.

Author/Source: AI Art Collective via 4KWallpapers

Description: A surreal digital composition exploring the boundaries of dreams and reality through saturated colors and fantastic elements.

3. Technological Magic: Light, Volume and Space

Contemporary art has long since abandoned the two-dimensional canvas. Through 3D projection mapping and light sculptures, space itself becomes the medium. Light now possesses volume, and architecture is transformed into a living tissue. These installations break the “fourth wall,” allowing the viewer to move within the artwork itself, changing it with their very presence.

Author/Source: HeavyM Design / Architectural Mapping

Description: A digital projection onto a building, illustrating how light art transforms static architecture into a dynamic sculpture.

4. The New Currency: Why the “WOW” Effect is Mandatory?

In an era of digital saturation, art fights for the scarcest resource: our attention. Visual shock is the way a piece “stops the scroll” and pulls us out of apathy. However, the true value of the “WOW” effect lies in its shareability. When art makes us hold our breath, we instinctively want to pass that feeling along. Thus, the visual wonder becomes a global dialogue, connecting millions through the power of aesthetic surprise.

Author/Source: Art Media Studio / Immersive Dreams

Description: An immersive art space where light installations engulf the viewer, turning them into an integral part of the artwork.

The Future Belongs to Visionaries

The art of the future will not be viewed in a frame—it will be experienced with all the senses. The visual revolution invites us to embrace technology not as a replacement for the human touch, but as a powerful amplifier of our imagination. The only limit to the new “WOW” effect is the artist’s courage to dream beyond the boundaries of the known.

In the heart of the Czech Republic, where tradition meets modernity, there is a company that creates light and coziness through its exceptional candles – UNIPAR. Founded in 1992, UNIPAR quickly established itself as a symbol of quality and elegance in the world of candle making.
History of the UNIPAR Company

The journey of UNIPAR began in 1992 in the small town of Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, Czech Republic. The founders of this family-owned company combined their skills and passion for candle making, inspired by traditional production methods. The company recognizes the importance of innovation and technological advancements, ensuring clean and stable candle burning. Using pure materials that support human health and the environment is another crucial pillar for UNIPAR’s progress and future.

Production, shop and gallery, Photo: UNIPAR

Starting with a small workshop, UNIPAR quickly expanded its production and began exporting its products to various countries around the world.

Production of UNIPAR: Unique Technology and Premium Quality

The production of UNIPAR candles is a process that combines traditional methods with modern technology to deliver a product that is not only beautiful but also safe to use. Every stage of the production process is carefully controlled to ensure the highest quality and sustainability.

Specific Features of the „Unipar“ Technology

UNIPAR candles are known for their unique technology and premium quality, which sets them apart on the market. The main material used in their production is hydrocarbon, which does not contain sulfur or oils. This innovative technology, called “Unipar,” ensures that the candles burn cleanly and efficiently, transforming into steam and carbon dioxide during combustion. Wicks are also made from high-quality materials that guarantee even and safe burning.

Production, Photo: UNIPAR

The “Unipar” technology involves a cold pressing method – manufacturing through compression. This leads to several important advantages:

Clean Burning: The flame of UNIPAR candles remains high and clean, without residual wax dripping down.

Stable Wick: The technology ensures that the wick does not drown in the candle, providing even and stable burning.

Coloring and Aromatic Composition

Coloring of UNIPAR candles is done on the surface using color nano pigmentation. This means that the colors are applied directly to the surface layer of the candle, which, in addition to giving bright and lasting shades, is completely harmless to human health.

The street art scene has long been a vibrant platform for artistic expression, often challenging societal norms and engaging communities on a visual level. In recent years, a new force has emerged in this dynamic world—Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI).

With its ability to generate original and innovative artwork, generative AI is revolutionizing the street art scene, pushing boundaries, and offering new possibilities for artistic creation.

In this article, we explore the impact of generative AI in the street art scene, its applications, and the implications it brings to this ever-evolving art form.

Understanding Generative AI in Street Art

Generative AI refers to the use of artificial intelligence algorithms to create new and unique content. In the context of street art, generative AI algorithms analyze various data sources, such as images, texts, and patterns, to generate original artwork that can be translated into large-scale murals or other street art forms.

This technology enables artists to explore new creative avenues, break away from traditional techniques, and bring an element of surprise and innovation to their work.

Applications of Generative AI in Street Art

Inspiration and Idea Generation

Generative AI serves as a powerful tool to inspire street artists and generate fresh ideas. By analyzing vast collections of street art images, graffiti tags, and other visual references, AI algorithms can create unique combinations, styles, and compositions that artists may not have considered.

This collaboration between human creativity and AI-driven inspiration opens up new possibilities for artistic expression.

Mural Design and Execution

Generative AI enables artists to create complex and intricate mural designs that may be challenging to achieve solely through manual techniques. AI algorithms can assist in generating detailed patterns, textures, and color schemes, providing artists with a starting point and a foundation for their mural creations.

This technology streamlines the design process, saves time, and allows artists to focus on implementing their vision on a larger scale.

Interactive Street Art

Generative AI can also enhance the interactive elements of street art, creating immersive experiences for viewers. By incorporating sensors and AI algorithms, street artists can create responsive artworks that react to the presence or actions of passersby.

This fusion of technology and street art blurs the boundaries between the physical and the virtual, engaging viewers in a unique and interactive way.

Implications and Considerations

While generative AI offers exciting possibilities for the street art scene, it also raises important considerations and implications:

Authorship and Originality

With AI algorithms generating artwork, questions of authorship and originality arise. Street artists using generative AI must carefully navigate the fine line between leveraging AI tools for inspiration and ensuring that their work remains a genuine expression of their creativity and personal style. Establishing a balance between human agency and AI assistance is crucial to preserving the authenticity and integrity of street art.

Community Engagement and Collaboration

Street art has a rich history of community engagement and collaboration. It is important to ensure that generative AI does not overshadow the collaborative nature of street art. Artists should aim to involve local communities, engage with cultural contexts, and maintain the spirit of inclusivity and community participation that makes street art a powerful medium for social commentary and expression.

Ethical Use of AI Technology

As with any AI application, ethical considerations must be addressed in the context of generative AI in street art. The data used to train AI algorithms should be diverse and representative, avoiding biases that could perpetuate inequalities or reinforce stereotypes. Transparency in the use of AI technology and its potential impact on the community is essential to foster trust and ensure responsible artistic practices.

The Future of Generative AI in Street Art

Generative AI has the potential to redefine the street art scene, bringing forth new forms of expression and artistic collaboration. As the technology continues to advance, we can expect more seamless integration of AI tools into the creative process, leading to even more awe-inspiring and thought-provoking street art installations.

The key lies in striking a balance between human creativity and the assistance offered by generative AI, ensuring that the street art scene remains a vibrant and authentic platform for self-expression and community engagement.

Generative AI is a powerful force within the street art scene, enabling artists to push boundaries, explore new creative frontiers, and engage viewers in novel ways. From inspiring new ideas to streamlining mural design and enhancing interactivity, generative AI offers exciting opportunities for street artists around the world. However, it is crucial to navigate the ethical implications, preserve artistic authenticity, and foster community engagement to ensure the continued growth and relevance of street art in the age of generative AI. With responsible and thoughtful integration, generative AI can be a transformative tool that amplifies the voices of street artists and captivates audiences globally.

If you’ve never celebrated Diwali, it’s an experience like no other! Diwali is a five day festival in India and is also known as the Festival of Lights. It celebrates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. During this festival, people assemble for prayer and attend special ceremonies, purchase gifts for their loved ones, decorate their homes with lights and diyas (traditional earthen lamps), exchange sweets with family and friends, and perform traditional dances.

On Diwali night itself, it’s customary for all family members to dress up in their finest clothes and gather around a bonfire to perform a special puja (a prayer ritual) before fireworks are lit up in the sky! The lighting of fireworks symbolises joy and acts as an offering to appease the gods.

Diwali has become increasingly popular among non-Indians too! You don’t need to be Hindu to enjoy the spectacular fireworks display or be part of a large scale celebration. So if you want to join in on the festivities make sure you check out some of India’s largest cities during this vibrant festival season!

5. La Tomatina, Buñol, Spain

We couldn’t miss this while we talk about Top 10 festivals in the world. Have you ever heard of the La Tomatina festival? It’s like nothing you’ve ever experienced before! Every year around late August, thousands of people descend upon Buñol in eastern Spain to throw tomatoes at each other in a huge, tomato-soaked free-for-all.

It’s an experience you won’t forget and one picture can’t do justice to. Just picture it… 90 minutes of tomatoes flying through the air — so much so that the town turns into a red lake — and everyone drenched in juice and pulp by the time it ends. It’s an epic celebration that locals have been taking part in for decades!

So what exactly is La Tomatina? Here are some talking points:

It’s held every year on the last Wednesday of August

The event has a strict rule—no “hard objects”—so no matter how bad you don’t want that tomato flung at your head, you won’t be hurt by it!

It all started when some friends decided to have a fight with tomatoes from nearby vendors in 1945

The local government banned it for a while but it was brought back in the ’70s

The festivities start with a greased pole climb and end with an epic tomato fight

Artistic pavements, also known as street art, street painting, and sidewalk art, or artistic performances designed to give an aesthetic look or design to the pavement. Examples of these fortunate pavements are subways, sidewalks, streets, recreational ground paths, and town squares with semi-permanent or completely impermanent drawings created using materials like chalk.

The art of modern artistic pavements can be traced back to Britain, where pavement artists were nearly all over the Kingdoms. Most of these artists in the late 19th century were earning their living as full-time pavement artists in major cities like London and Manchester. Today many sites have delved deeper into this trade by providing enthusiasts with insight about artistic pavements and their contribution towards aesthetic on our streets.

Origin of Artistic Pavements

Screever is a British name given to pavement artist. The term originated from the Copperplate writing style, which often accompanied the pavement artists’ works since the early years.

Screevers works from time immemorial were often accompanied by proverbs and poems, political commentary, lessons on morality based on a particular period event. They produced a topical pictorial illustration of current events or trends and appealing to all people, the literate and the illiterate. This phenomenon explains the importance of art as a tool for educating masses or preserving the historical heritage as all can understand visual images. Most importantly, for Screevers to earn their living, they would also try and catch the eye of the elite in the community to attract their money offered as donations for their efforts.

These noble people have earned different titles across the world such as chalk artists, and a title street painter is mostly referred to in the USA and Madonnari in Italy because they are known to have recreated the images of the Madonna. In Germany they are called Strassenmajor; a title coined from two words, namely streets (straßen) and painters(mailer).

Madonnari traces their origin to the sixteenth century where they were mostly itinerant artists, who had come to Rome and other cities to work on the cathedrals. After completion of work, they needed another way to earn a living, and that is how they started recreating the paintings borrowed from the church on pavements. They would also travel to attend holy days and festivals held in various towns and provinces, participate in the festivities and make a living from impressed observers’ donations as a show of goodwill and approval of their artistic work. To make a living from onlookers who would offer coins to them if they approved of the artist’s work. Madonnari mostly viewed as simple folk artists used to reproduce simple images using simple materials, e.g., coal, tiles, chalk, coal, and charcoal.

Developments in the artistic pavement

Street art has evolved from the 1700s to the 21st century where items of focus, the motivation behind the art and the generation of artists we have. It everywhere takes over walls of buildings in major towns and cities, covering the subways and the streets and painting the world too. It has evolved to be a more creative form of art.

The artistic pavement evolution began in 1973, where street painting began to be promoted across Italy through the formation of a two-day art festival starting in Grazie DI Curtatone, Mantua Province.

Kurt Wenner, world’s most popular street artist and one of the proponents of modern day street art, In the 1980s, he practiced 3D pavement art. This art is referred to as anamorphic art or one-point perspective art too. It is an old technique, but put into work successfully in recent years, mainly through the use of computers. To see the image correctly, you have only to view it from a specific angle.

In the United States, the concept of impermanence has over the years been a problematic concept for art lovers to embrace. This notion can be blamed on the fact that ours is a materialistic culture where we don’t believe or want to accept that an artist’s work should wash away. One of the largest street painting events in the United States is the Lake Worth Street Painting Festival. It is usually held in Lake Worth, Florida and was started in 1994 attracting a record 100,000 visitors over a weekend.

Examples of great artistic pavements work in the US are; Leon Keer – At Chalk Festival in Sarasota, Florida, Street Art by Ron English in New York, USA, Yarn Bombing – R2D2 in Bellingham, Washington, USA, In Johnson City, TN, USA and Daddy Long Legs – In Seattle, USA among many others that are on your street and i haven’t mentioned them.

How artistic pavements are made

World over decorative sidewalks has become a norm, but with a diverse approach from the olden days, e.g., use of 3D in the artwork. But we would do well to appreciate where this strange ritual originated. Looking at significant civilizations leaves us in awe as we ponder through the great works of art. In Portugal, artistic pavements ideas came from Rome. The work consists of using small flat pieces of stones that arranged in an image or pattern, just like a mosaic. Artisans first lay bedding of gravel on the well-compacted trench using argillaceous materials. The gravel helps accommodate the tessera stones that act like cement.

There are simple steps followed to get an excellent, complete work:

Artisans prepare the small flat stones

After preparation, careful placement of rocks follows. This process of placement is done manually by placing each stone at a time.

After stones placement, finishing works are done by spreading a cement mix on the pavement for compatibility effect.

Finally, the artwork is complete, and the outcome of the great work wows pavement users.

With few people wanting to stick to the kind of craftsmanship seen in Portugal and Italy, street art practice may be coming to an end. But there are people who are still saving this noble through integrating simpler ways of doing it in the past, and a new approach by use of anamorphosis concept also described as a Renaissance-era of artistic thought. Through this method, a deformed image, form and only appears in its correct shape when viewed from a specific position or in an unconventional way.

This method is called three-dimensional (3-D). In 3-D art uses two processes, namely additive where an artist creates a form using materials or subtractive process that removes materials from an already existing form.

Methods used by artists in the 3-D art are:

1. Sculpture

This refers to any artwork attained through manipulation of materials resulting to a 3D object. Materials used are from plastic, glass, etc.

2. Assemblage or Construction

Artists uses found, altered or manufactured objects and items to create a piece of art. This method has been used by Sculptor Debra Butterfield to come up with amazing pieces of art.

3. Installation and performance art

This is a 3D concept that utilizes multiple facets from different mediums and takes the whole space to generate a beautiful piece of art. It can be either site-specific or generic. Installations and performance arts are complex and mainly used to addresses narrative ideas and above all aesthetics on a much higher scale compared to sculpture. Its origin can be traced to a period after world war during the Dada art movement.

4. Decorative art

This is a distinct feature on pavements and streets mainly in the African-American neighborhoods.

5. Product design

A 3D street painting is called an anamorphic painting. Anamorphosis as an art technique brings awe and clamor on artwork because when used it distorts a picture in a way that you can only figure out what it is if you view it from a vantage point. 3D artistic pavement is a 2-dimensional artwork drawn on an actual sidewalk or street and gives the observer or viewer a 3-dimensional optical illusion if viewed from a particular angle or say perspective. It is a piece of beauty, an art masterpiece giving viewers an incredibly captivating, breathtaking and realistic feeling once they figure out the correct angle or position. The most common 2- dimensional models you will find if you visit fiferent websites of a 2-dimensional models are where the edges of the page are parallel to two of the three dimensions, and the third dimension is portrayed through diminishing size, overlapping, diminishing size and any other techniques that could bring about the perspective. It’s interesting, right!!! Then why don’t you try it out?

The importance of Artistic pavements

The world’s great street artists like Julian Beaver, Kurt Wenner, Edgar Muller, Banksy, and Tracy Lee Stum have made a fortune through integrating traditional works of art with the modern order and making mind-blowing and world’s most highly coveted works of art. Youths with artistic talent can indulge in this practice, and they will harness fulfillment, improve on their skills and not forget the fortune they can make from this talent. As they do street art they can also engage in commercial forms of art mainly in textiles, advertising, cultural fests, development of labels and logos and this is a fantastic way to earn a living. Thanks to the embracement of street art as part of the culture, it’s now almost everywhere and indecent forms.

Art is part of us, intertwined with our lives and found in almost every aspect of humanity. It embodies creativity and catapults it to a higher level. Creativity, in turn, builds us into great geniuses, and now that is how life becomes fun and worthwhile. It captures moments of joy, sadness, happiness, a celebration not for the benefit of the people of today but for generations to come. Art does not fade away, and it is timeless and new with every day that dawn on us.

Art in modern society as was in the old culture has been a medium for expressing one’s thoughts, and a means through which their beliefs manifest. Through this way of expression, I to the benefit of so many people within a society whose voices could not be heard. Artistic pavement is a platform for enriching an entire community through works of art. There are stress relievers, but none is better than a great piece of art. It manipulates human conscience by giving an individual some form of illusion, especially 3D art where one takes a journey to a fantasy world. The masses get lost in the moment, and phew, all stress is gone.

For artists, impermanent nature of street art enhances imagination, creativity in progress, the ability to see things and imagine things unseen before and mental growth through a move from simple to intricate works of art. Works of art will be all over today, in Escape rooms, Theatres, Movies, and Music. It is defining us as individuals, and it’s a tool for improving lives, making us better each day.

Misconceptions about Artistic pavements

Artistic pavements are impermanent and legal. It is very distinct from graffiti which is more word based on street arts are a non-destructive image-based form of art. What happens when it rains? Art is more than a product; it is a form of creation too with each day bringing in a bolder, more creative piece of art compared to yesterday. So there is a tentative development of image and skill. It is ever work in progress, hence need for impermanence. After a piece of art is completed and audiences get an opportunity to admire it, then its purpose is served. If an artist has fully expressed him/ herself and the audience has observed creativity at its best, then the art getting washed away doesn’t leave the artist with hard feelings.

Street art is a ritual and not a marketable commercial product for auctioning for a fixed value. The artistic worth of a piece of an artwork is not defined by how much profits it is worth making. Its impermanence nature means it’s just for aesthetic value not as a gain in capital markets. Kurt Wenner was saying the impermanent nature of art makes him feel like he has offered an offering and the ritual is complete. That’s the beauty of street art.

Artistic pavement is enjoyable and a fulfilled process, but there is a lot of discomfort to the artist brought by nature, such as fatigue, scorching sun, extreme cold or heat, being treated to winds, rain, thirst and also being brutally treated by unapologetic city council workers. Bending over for long hours and concentrating too is quite a tedious process, but the outcome is rewarding.

Artistic pavement is an incredible experience as you figure out what beautiful and magnificent pieces of art can do to dull streets, street walls, sidewalks. Think of peace of mind and heart on onlookers, think about the heritage, the moral lessons you could pass through art. Honestly, it’s a ritual, and it’s a fantastic experience that is both adventurous and great to pursue. You don’t have to be a professional. It is an open party for anyone who believes they can do it.

Can a museum truly become the heart of its community?

That is the ambitious question the new Buffalo AKG Art Museum, formerly the Albright Knox Art Gallery, has tried to answer with its recently unveiled renovation and expansion designed by Shohei Shigematsu of OMA in collaboration with Cooper Robertson. This past weekend, the much-anticipated new campus opened to the public, free of admission, reportedly drawing more than 11,000 visitors.

The three-and-a-half-year construction project was made possible by a $230 million capital campaign ($195 million for construction, $35 million for additional endowment), a striking sum that marks the single largest capital campaign for a cultural institution in the history of Western New York.

The project’s crowing achievement, the Jeffrey E. Gundlach Building—named after the Buffalo native who gave $65 million to the project—now sits on one side of the museum campus, a space befitting a world-class institution. The circular building, luminously veiled in glass, expands the museum’s exhibition space by some 30,000 square feet. This addition is currently finalizing essential construction and will officially open to the public on July 20.

In many ways, the remarkable financial investment in the museum is a testament to a percolating optimism in Buffalo and the belief that the makeover of this 161-year-old institution—the sixth oldest art museum in the U.S., in fact—will usher in a long-awaited renaissance for the industrial city that has seen its fair share of struggle.

Building Toward the Future

For Janne Sirén, the director of the Buffalo AKG who joined the museum in 2013, the renovation has always been about far more than a structural project, but a symbolic rebuilding of a relationship between the museum and its community. “As museums, we pride ourselves as custodians of great art and as champions of artists, these bravest of individuals,” said Sirén. “But sometimes the general public can feel a little unwelcome, which is something we wanted to address.”

Before OMA began the project in 2016, Sirén invited Shigematsu to his grandfather’s cabin in Finland, where the two drank beers, enjoyed the sauna, and discussed the future of the museum. Sirén emphasized that the designers wouldn’t have creative carte blanche, but that the design should emerge through collaboration, with museum staff and the public.

To make this possible, the museum hosted a series of town halls and community meetings from the inception of the project, putting the public in conversation with museum leaders and, as the project progressed, with Shigematsu himself. When an early 2017 proposal met with pushback from locals, Shigematsu and the museum hit pause, revising the proposal to reflect these considerations.

In its final form, the building has an origami-like effect of both turning outward toward the city and pulling the city into the museum.

The grand staircase leading up to the museum’s original 1905 neoclassical building has been restored, offering an impressive invitation to entry. This marble staircase was removed during a 1962 renovation by American architect Gordon Bunshaft, and replaced with a parking lot. Here, OMA has moved parking underground and restored a large lawn at the heart of the museum campus, offering a green gathering place to the public, emphasizing the campus-like space, and placing the museum in more open conversation with the institutions it faces, including the Burchfield Penney Art Center and Buffalo State University.

One of the most luminous and moving additions to the museum is Common Sky, a new site-specific commission by Olafur Eliasson and Sebastian Behmann of Studio Other Spaces in the Seymour H. Knox Building. The Knox Building was part of the 1962 Bunshaft addition and previously contained an open-air courtyard that was largely inaccessible to museum visitors, especially during Buffalo’s long winter months. Common Sky now encloses that courtyard, renamed the Ralph C. Wilson Town Square.

At once architectural and sculptural, Common Sky presents a canopy of glass and mirrors rendered in alternating triangular segments that allow the light to pour into the space below. Visitors can look up and see themselves reflected in the mirrors too, creating a synergistic and kaleidoscopic pushing and pulling of reflections and space. Common Sky’s form tapers into the courtyard itself, with a cyclone-shaped column that leads to a complex system of drains below. This asymmetrical element nods both to the location of a lone hawthorn tree planted in the original courtyard in the 1960s, while simultaneously serving as a drainage system of rain and snow that Buffalo is famed for.

During a press tour, it was impossible to ignore the lingering smoke in the air blown south from Canadian wildfires, and in that sense, the installation was a poetic and powerful encapsulation of our interconnected existence—a reflection on the shared experience of the sky.

“As an artwork, it sensitizes you to the world outside, to the surrounding environment of Buffalo. It draws your attention to things that are difficult to measure, to things that depend on emotion and on your active involvement,” said Eliasson.

Along with Common Sky, the Knox Building also houses Cornelia, a new restaurant that includes a 30-foot glass mosaic by Firelei Baez, five studio classrooms, and Creative Commons, a first-ever museum learning center in partnership with the LEGO Foundation. Visitors will be able to see rotating installations from the museum’s permanent collection at the 2,000-square-foot M&T Bank gallery free of charge. Currently on view is “Looking Back: Lucas Samaras’s Mirrored Room,” which presents the artist’s work Room No. 2 (1966), commonly known as Mirrored Room and among the most beloved works in the museum’s collection.

A Storied Collection That’s Writing New Chapters

In many ways, Buffalo AKG’s renovation allows curators to showcase what it’s already had—a stellar permanent collection. Entering the museum’s main structure, the 1905 Neoclassical Wilbers building, the museum has for the first time been able to showcase a breadth of its storied holdings thanks to expanded gallery space.

Greeting visitors as they enter is Albert Bierstadt’s The Marina Piccola, Capri (1859), which was gifted to the museum by the artist when it opened in 1863. Pablo Picasso’s La Toilette (1906), another collection gem, is also on view, a nude so frank its acquisition scandalized the public, along with Giacomo Balla’s iconic Futurist work, (Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash) (1912).

The museum has particularly vast holdings of abstraction and here it dazzles. Jackson Pollock’s Convergence (1952) is so strikingly fresh-looking, one can imagine a hint of how audiences in the 1950s felt seeing his work for the first time. Joan Mitchell’s George Went Swimming at Barnes Hole, but It Got Too Cold (1957) is similarly awe-inducing. The largely chronological hang also includes top-tier works by Frida Kahlo, Romare Bearden, and Marisol, many other names familiar and those less so.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-2327070" src="https://news.artnet.com/app/news-upload/2023/06/31-1024x768.jpg" sizes="auto, (max-width: 908px) 100vw, 908px" srcset="https://news.artnet.com/app/news-upload/2023/06/31-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://news.artnet.com/app/news-upload/2023/06/31-300x225.jpg 300w, https://news.artnet.com/app/news-upload/2023/06/31-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://news.artnet.com/app/news-upload/2023/06/31-50x38.jpg 50w, https://news.artnet.com/app/news-upload/2023/06/31-1920x1440.jpg 1920w, https://news.artnet.com/app/news-upload/2023/06/31.jpg 2000w" alt="31 View of the Sculpture Court in the Wilmers Building with, from left to right, Aristide Maillol, La Nuit (Night), 1902-1909; Morgan Russell, Synchromy in Orange: To Form, 1913- 1914; Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Die Knieende (Kneeling Woman), 1911.
For what is essentially a straightforward collection install, the effect is surprisingly revelatory—one realizes how rare it is to see best-in-class artworks together in one place. Here, there aren’t many slackers. That impression continues over in the Gundlach Building, where the curators look again toward their collection (the building was still under construction when I visited but the galleries were complete).

On the ground floor is “Clyfford Still: A Legacy for Buffalo,” curated by Cathleen Chaffee, the museum’s chief curator. The exhibition marks the first time in more than 15 years that the museum has shown its entire Still collection. It includes 33 paintings, 31 of which were gifted by the artist between 1937 to 1963, making it the second largest in the world after the Clyfford Still Museum’s collection.

These monumental abstractions are vivid encounters with color and texture, and underscore the museum’s dedicated relationships with artists; Still developed a friendship with the museum’s former director Gordon M. Smith and board president Seymour H. Knox, Jr. in the 1950s. Smith had offered Still his first museum-scale survey in 1959, giving the artist unprecedented control over its shape, eventually resulting in the donation of works.

The ground floor of the Gundlach building also includes the so-called Nordic Gallery, which was empty as of press time, but which will be devoted to Scandinavian art. One can find hints of what that gallery might hold upstairs, on the second and third floors of the building, in the museum’s installation of late 20th- and early 21st-century artworks including Greenland-born artist Pia Arke’s video work Arctic Hysteria (1996) and Swedish artist Ragna Bley’s Serrated Tongues (2021). These galleries are a treasure trove, with enough top-notch work to elicit a novel; they include Carolee Schneemann’s Meat Joy (1964), Mark Bradford’s eyecatching Mississippi Gottdam (2007), and an excellent Robert Gober sink, among many others.

Perhaps the most fun is the third floor of the Gundlach Building, which showcases Buffalo AKG’s newest acquisitions and includes works by Genesis Tremaine, Deborah Roberts, a great Martha Jungwirth, and a luminous Simone Forti hologram.

The installation hints at continuation rather than any sort of backward-looking sentiment, which feels accurate as the museum has certainly not lost its penchant for collecting. Since the construction began, the museum has rapidly expanded its holdings—in the past four years, it has added some 518 works to the collection, including 200 works by Pop art sculptor Marisol (Chaffee is organizing an expansive exhibition of the Venezuelan artist’s work, which will originate in Montreal before returning to the Buffalo AKG).

Overall, there is something that feels deeply respectful about the new Buffalo AKG and its relationship with artists and its community. The museum does seem to say: yes, we are the heart.

Leaving Buffalo, a chatty woman sat beside me on my flight. When I told her I was visiting to see the museum, she smiled. “We’re all so excited about it,” she said. “Buffalo is a blue-collar town with beer-drinking, football-loving, down-to-earth people. But we deserve a great museum too.”

Spidertag works since 2008 reinterpreting geometry, abstraction and minimalism -recently symbolism- in the streets and rural spaces globally. After a few years creating outdoor paths using wool threads only, at the end of 2015 he discovered flexible neon cables that can be used with batteries, allowing him to start creating permanent and interactive large scale murals. His influences range from Russian Constructivism, to Kinetic art, through electronic and alternative music and literature, cinema, videogames, graffiti and current muralism or modern architecture.
